Mole and Amount of Substance
Prerequisites
A single drop of water contains roughly 1.67 x 10²¹ molecules. Chemists cannot count individual molecules any more than economists count individual dollars in GDP. They need a bulk unit, and that unit is the mole.
One mole equals 6.022 x 10²³ particles (Avogadro's number). This number was chosen so that one mole of any element, measured in grams, equals its atomic mass. One mole of carbon-12 weighs exactly 12 grams. One mole of uranium-235 weighs 235 grams. The mole bridges the atomic world (where a single uranium atom weighs 3.9 x 10⁻²² grams) to the laboratory world (where you can weigh 235 grams on a scale).
For energy, the mole is how chemists and engineers compare fuels on equal footing. "Burning methane releases 890 kJ per mole" means 890 kJ per 16 grams of methane (since methane's molecular weight is 16). "Burning hydrogen releases 286 kJ per mole" means 286 kJ per 2 grams of hydrogen. Without the mole, comparing chemical energy content across different fuels would require specifying arbitrary masses every time.
Worked Example
You need to compare the energy released by burning ethanol (C₂H₅OH) versus octane (C₈H₁₈).
- Find molar masses. Ethanol: (2x12) + (6x1) + 16 = 46 g/mol. Octane: (8x12) + (18x1) = 114 g/mol.
- Look up combustion energies. Ethanol: 1,367 kJ/mol. Octane: 5,471 kJ/mol.
Octane releases 4 times more energy per mole. Does that mean octane is 4 times better as a fuel?
Not per gram. Ethanol: 1,367/46 = 29.7 kJ/g. Octane: 5,471/114 = 48.0 kJ/g. Octane releases about 1.6 times more per gram, not 4 times. The mole comparison tells you about the chemistry; the per-gram comparison tells you about the fuel tank.
The mole lets you translate between atomic-scale reactions and the real-world quantities that show up in energy policy.
Why was Avogadro's number (6.022 x 10²³) chosen as the size of a mole?
The mole was defined so that atomic-scale masses (measured in atomic mass units) translate directly to laboratory-scale masses (measured in grams).
