Greenhouse Effect Mechanism
Prerequisites
Without greenhouse gases, Earth's average surface temperature would be about -18°C (0°F), roughly 33 degrees colder than it actually is. The greenhouse effect is not a problem. It is the reason the planet is habitable. The problem is the rate at which humans are intensifying it.
The mechanism has three steps. Step 1. The sun emits short-wavelength radiation (mostly visible light), which passes through the atmosphere and warms the Earth's surface. Step 2. The warm surface re-emits energy as long-wavelength infrared radiation (heat). Step 3. Certain gas molecules (CO₂, CH₄, N₂O, water vapor) absorb this outgoing infrared radiation and re-emit it in all directions, including back toward the surface. This "trapping" of outgoing heat warms the surface above what it would be with no atmosphere.
The key physics: greenhouse gases are transparent to incoming shortwave light but opaque to outgoing longwave infrared. They act like a one-way filter. Adding more of these gases (by burning fossil fuels, for instance) thickens the filter, trapping more outgoing radiation, and the surface must warm further to radiate enough energy to reach thermal equilibrium.
Worked Example
CO₂ concentrations have risen from about 280 ppm (pre-industrial) to about 425 ppm (2024).
- Calculate the increase. 425 - 280 = 145 ppm, a 52% increase.
- Understand the effect. The radiative forcing (extra energy trapped) scales roughly logarithmically with CO₂ concentration. Doubling CO₂ from 280 to 560 ppm would add about 3.7 W/m² of forcing.
We are about halfway to doubling (425/280 = 1.52). Has half the warming from a doubling already occurred?
Roughly yes, because the logarithmic relationship means each increment adds proportionally less forcing. The first 50% increase captures more than half the forcing of a full doubling. This is why the next 135 ppm will have a smaller warming effect than the first 145 ppm.
