Lifecycle Emissions Comparison
Prerequisites
A solar panel produces zero emissions while generating electricity. But manufacturing the panel, mining the silicon, shipping it from China, and eventually disposing of it all produce CO2. Lifecycle analysis counts everything, not just the smokestack.
Lifecycle emissions (gCO2e/kWh) include all greenhouse gas emissions across a technology's full life: raw material extraction, manufacturing, construction, fuel supply (mining, drilling, transport), operation, and decommissioning. The IPCC's median lifecycle estimates rank technologies clearly. Coal: 820. Gas: 490. Biomass: 230 (excluding carbon neutrality assumptions). Solar PV: 41. Geothermal: 38. Hydropower: 24. Offshore wind: 12. Nuclear: 12. Onshore wind: 11.
Understand the fossil-renewable gap. Even including manufacturing emissions, wind and nuclear are roughly 70x lower than coal on a lifecycle basis. Solar is 20x lower. This gap cannot be closed by improving coal plant efficiency.
Decompose solar's lifecycle emissions. Silicon purification and cell manufacturing account for about 60% of solar PV's lifecycle emissions. As manufacturing shifts to cleaner grids (or uses solar-powered factories), this fraction will decline further.
If nuclear and wind have nearly identical lifecycle emissions (~12 gCO2e/kWh), why do public perceptions treat them so differently?
Perception vs. data. Risk salience (nuclear accidents are dramatic; wind turbine manufacturing is invisible) drives public perception more than lifecycle data. Policy informed by lifecycle analysis rather than salience would treat nuclear and wind as equivalent on the carbon dimension.
Lifecycle emissions provide the most complete basis for comparing technologies' climate impact, though the choice of system boundaries and assumptions can shift results by 2-3x.
