Prerequisites
Climate projections are not predictions. They are "if-then" scenarios: if the world follows pathway X, then warming reaches Y by 2100. The Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs) are the five standardized scenarios the IPCC uses, and confusing them with forecasts is one of the most common errors in climate communication.
Each SSP describes a different combination of population growth, economic development, technology change, and policy ambition. SSP1-1.9 ("sustainability") assumes aggressive mitigation and reaches roughly 1.5C. SSP2-4.5 ("middle of the road") assumes moderate ambition and reaches roughly 2.7C. SSP3-7.0 ("regional rivalry") assumes fragmented policy and reaches roughly 3.6C. SSP5-8.5 ("fossil-fueled development") assumes very high fossil use and reaches roughly 4.4C.
The naming convention. "SSP5-8.5" means Shared Socioeconomic Pathway 5 combined with a radiative forcing of 8.5 watts per square meter by 2100. The first number is the socioeconomic narrative; the second is the resulting energy imbalance.
Which SSP is "most likely"?
None of them, by design. SSPs are not probability-weighted forecasts. They are bounding scenarios designed to span the range of plausible futures. SSP5-8.5 was created as a high-end benchmark, not a "business as usual" prediction, though it is frequently mischaracterized as one in media coverage. Current policies most closely track SSP2-4.5, but actual outcomes will not match any single pathway cleanly. The value of SSPs is in showing how different choices lead to different outcomes, not in predicting which outcome will occur.

SSP5-8.5 assumes fossil fuel use well above current trajectories, including massive coal expansion that existing policies and market trends make unlikely. It serves as an upper bound for stress-testing, not as a prediction. Current policies most closely track SSP2-4.5.
