Reactor Components

Every commercial nuclear reactor on Earth uses the same five components. The fuel, moderator, coolant, control rods, and containment each serve a distinct function, and understanding what each does explains why reactor designs differ and why nuclear accidents unfold the way they do.

The fuel (typically uranium oxide pellets enriched to 3-5% U-235) is where fission occurs, releasing heat. The moderator (water, graphite, or heavy water) slows fast neutrons to thermal speeds so they are more likely to cause additional fissions, sustaining the chain reaction. The coolant (water, gas, or liquid metal) carries heat from the fuel to the steam generators. In most commercial reactors, water serves as both moderator and coolant. Control rods (boron or hafnium) absorb neutrons to regulate the reaction rate; inserting them slows fission, withdrawing them speeds it up. Containment (reinforced concrete and steel) is the final barrier preventing radioactive material from reaching the environment.

Trace the heat path. Fission heats fuel pellets to about 400 degrees C. Coolant water carries that heat to a steam generator. Steam drives a turbine (Rankine cycle) at about 33% thermal efficiency.

Understand the moderator's role. Fast neutrons from fission have too much kinetic energy to efficiently split U-235. The moderator slows them via collisions, like a billiard ball hitting another of similar mass.

What happens if the coolant (which is also the moderator) is lost in a light-water reactor?

Built-in safety. Losing coolant also removes the moderator, which stops the chain reaction. This is a negative feedback loop: the physics of light-water reactors makes runaway fission less likely (though decay heat still requires cooling).

Every reactor accident traces back to one of these five failing or being defeated: Chernobyl lost control of its moderator, Fukushima lost its coolant, Three Mile Island's operators misread which one was failing. Knowing the five components means knowing where to look first.
