Energy Claims Filter

Prerequisites

A lobbying group claims natural gas is "50% cleaner than coal." A nonprofit says solar is "now cheaper than every fossil fuel." Both statements contain verifiable facts and deliberate omissions. Four questions, asked in order, catch most of the problems.

The energy claims filter is a four-question protocol for evaluating any energy statistic or claim before accepting it:

  1. What units? "50% cleaner" in what: CO₂ per MWh? Total lifecycle emissions? Particulate matter? The answer changes the conclusion. Natural gas emits about 50% less CO₂ per MWh than coal but more methane (a potent greenhouse gas) during extraction.

  2. What timeframe? A chart showing solar costs "plummeting" from 2010 to 2024 tells a real story. The same data from 2020 to 2024 shows a much flatter curve. The chosen start date shapes the narrative.

  3. What is included or excluded? "Solar is cheaper than gas" may compare LCOE (cost of generation only) while excluding integration costs (backup, transmission, storage) that solar requires and gas does not. Or it may include subsidies for one and not the other.

  4. What is the comparison? "Wind power grew 300%" sounds transformative until you learn the comparison is against wind's own small base, not against total generation. (See base rate vs. growth rate.)

Worked Example

A headline claims: "Renewable energy investment hit a record $500 billion in 2023."

  • What units? Dollars. Nominal or inflation-adjusted? Nominal. Inflation alone accounts for significant growth.
  • What timeframe? The record is framed as a single year, but is it cumulative or annual? Annual.
  • What is included? Does "$500 billion" include large hydro, or only wind and solar? Sources vary.

How would the claim look different if adjusted for inflation and compared to total energy investment (including fossil fuels)?

Total global energy investment was about $2.8 trillion in 2023. Renewables' $500 billion is about 18% of the total. Still significant, but "record $500 billion" and "18% of total energy investment" create very different impressions.

Running these four questions takes thirty seconds and catches the majority of misleading energy claims.

A claim states that "nuclear energy produces zero emissions." Applying the filter, the most important follow-up question is:

"Zero emissions" is true for direct combustion CO₂ but excludes lifecycle emissions from construction, uranium mining, and enrichment. The claim's accuracy depends entirely on what is included.
