Grid-Forming Inverters
Prerequisites
A conventional solar or battery inverter watches the grid's voltage and frequency, then injects current in sync with that signal. Remove the signal (during a blackout), and the inverter shuts down. It cannot operate without a grid to follow. This is fine at 20% renewables. At 80-100%, there may not be enough conventional generators left to provide the signal.
Grid-following inverters (the standard design) synchronize to the grid's existing 60 Hz waveform. They push power in but do not set the frequency or voltage. Grid-forming inverters create their own voltage and frequency reference, acting as virtual synchronous generators. They can start from a dead grid (black start), stabilize frequency, and provide the grid reference signal that other devices follow.
Understand the transition problem. Today, synchronous generators (gas, coal, nuclear, hydro turbines) spinning at 60 Hz create the grid's frequency reference. Their rotational inertia resists sudden frequency changes. As these generators retire and inverter-based resources replace them, the grid loses both the frequency reference and the inertia that stabilizes it.
What happens when the last synchronous generator on a section of grid goes offline?
Grid-forming fills the gap. Grid-forming inverters synthesize a stable voltage waveform and can mimic inertial response through control algorithms. They allow a 100% inverter-based grid to maintain frequency stability. Without grid-forming capability, high-renewable grids risk frequency instability during disturbances.
Grid-forming inverters are not optional for the energy transition. They are a prerequisite for grids above roughly 80% inverter-based generation.
