Dimensional Analysis Method
Prerequisites
A staffer once wrote that a power plant generates "500 megawatts per hour." The unit is wrong: megawatts already measure energy per unit time, so "megawatts per hour" means energy per time per time, which is acceleration of energy flow. The error changed the meaning entirely. Dimensional analysis would have caught it in seconds.
Dimensional analysis is the practice of tracking physical dimensions (mass, length, time, energy, power) through a calculation the same way you track variables in algebra. Units on the left side of an equation must equal units on the right. If they do not, the equation is wrong, regardless of whether the numbers look plausible.
The method also converts between units by chaining conversion factors so that unwanted units cancel. You multiply by fractions equal to 1 (like 3,600 seconds / 1 hour) and cancel matching units in numerator and denominator until only the target unit remains.
Worked Example
Convert 50 megawatt-hours (MWh) to gigajoules (GJ).
- Convert MWh to kWh. 50 MWh x 1,000 kWh/MWh = 50,000 kWh.
- Convert kWh to joules. 50,000 kWh x 3.6 x 10⁶ J/kWh = 1.8 x 10¹¹ J.
- Convert joules to gigajoules. 1.8 x 10¹¹ J / 10⁹ J/GJ = 180 GJ.
At each step, which units cancelled?
In Step 1, MWh cancelled. In Step 2, kWh cancelled. In Step 3, J cancelled, leaving GJ. If you set up a conversion and the units do not cancel cleanly, you have the fraction upside down.
Nobody catches every arithmetic mistake by intuition. Almost everybody can cancel units, which is why dimensional analysis catches errors that slip past reviewers with decades of subject-matter expertise.
A report states a power plant produces "200 gigawatts per year." What is wrong with this unit?
Gigawatts = energy/time. Adding "per year" gives energy/time², which is not a meaningful energy quantity. The report likely means 200 gigawatt-hours per year (energy) or 200 gigawatts (power).
