Energy Units Overview

The same power plant might report output in megawatt-hours to the grid operator, in British thermal units to the gas supplier, and in barrels of oil equivalent to an international agency. Same energy, three different units. If you cannot convert between them, you cannot compare claims across sources.

Five units dominate energy discussions. The joule (J) is the SI base unit, used in physics and engineering. The kilowatt-hour (kWh) equals 3.6 million joules and is the standard unit on electricity bills. The British thermal unit (BTU) is used in U.S. heating and natural gas markets; one BTU is about 1,055 joules. The quad (quadrillion BTU, or 10¹⁵ BTU) measures national-scale energy; the U.S. consumed about 94 quads in 2023. The tonne of oil equivalent (toe) is used in international comparisons; one toe equals about 42 gigajoules.

Each unit persists because a different industry adopted it first, and switching costs are high. Knowing the conversion factors between them is not trivia; it is the prerequisite for reading any energy policy document.

Worked Example

A natural gas bill shows a household used 80 therms last month. One therm = 100,000 BTU.

  • Convert to BTU. 80 therms x 100,000 = 8,000,000 BTU.
  • Convert to kWh. One kWh = 3,412 BTU.

How many kWh is 8 million BTU?

8,000,000 / 3,412 = about 2,344 kWh. For comparison, the average U.S. household uses about 900 kWh of electricity per month. The gas bill represents more than twice that in raw energy, which illustrates how much energy goes to heating.

Once you can move between units fluently, comparing energy sources becomes arithmetic instead of guesswork.
