Energy Addition Not Substitution

Prerequisites

Coal was supposed to replace wood. Oil was supposed to replace coal. Natural gas was supposed to replace oil. None of them did. Global consumption of wood, coal, oil, and gas all hit record highs in the 2020s. Every "transition" in energy history has been an addition, not a substitution.

The historical record is unambiguous. When coal became dominant in the 19th century, wood consumption did not decline; it flattened and then resumed growing. When oil surged in the 20th century, coal kept growing alongside it. When natural gas expanded, oil and coal continued to rise. Each new source added a layer to the energy stack without removing the one below it. Global primary energy use has followed a stacking pattern for over 200 years.

The reason is demand growth. Energy consumption has risen in every decade since industrialization, driven by population growth and rising per-capita consumption. New sources did not need to displace old ones because total demand kept creating room for all of them. The only fuels that have declined in absolute terms (whale oil, peat) were small niche sources, not primary pillars of the energy system.

Worked Example

In 1965, coal provided about 37% of global primary energy. By 2023, coal's share had fallen to about 27%.

  • Check absolute numbers. Global primary energy roughly tripled from 1965 to 2023.
  • Calculate. 37% of 1x = 0.37x. 27% of 3x = 0.81x.

Did coal consumption actually decline, or just its share?

Coal consumption more than doubled in absolute terms. The share fell only because oil, gas, nuclear, and renewables grew even faster. A declining share does not mean declining use.

This pattern is the context for every energy transition forecast: if history holds, new sources add to the total rather than replacing what exists.
