Methane Near-Term Warming
Prerequisites
Methane is 80 times more potent than CO2 over 20 years, but it breaks down in the atmosphere within about 12 years. CO2 persists for centuries. This difference in atmospheric lifetime makes methane the fastest lever for slowing near-term warming.
Because methane degrades relatively quickly, reducing methane emissions produces measurable cooling effects within a decade. CO2 reductions, by contrast, prevent future warming but do not reverse warming already locked in by the CO2 already in the atmosphere. The IPCC estimates that aggressive methane reduction could avoid 0.2-0.3 degrees C of warming by 2050, a significant fraction of the remaining budget before 1.5 degrees C.
Identify the major sources. Roughly 60% of methane emissions are anthropogenic: oil and gas operations (leaks and venting), livestock (enteric fermentation), rice paddies, landfills, and coal mines. The oil and gas sector alone accounts for about 25% of human-caused methane.
Assess abatement cost. The IEA estimates that 40% of oil and gas methane emissions can be eliminated at zero net cost because the captured gas is worth more than the cost of fixing the leak.
If 40% of methane abatement is free, why hasn't it happened already?
Explain the gap. Methane leaks are diffuse, hard to detect from the ground, and historically unregulated. Satellite monitoring (launched at scale after 2020) is changing this by making large leaks visible and attributable to specific operators.
Methane is the rare policy target where speed, cost-effectiveness, and measurability align, making it central to near-term climate strategy even as CO2 reductions remain essential for long-term stabilization.
