Black Start Process

Most power plants need electricity to start. A gas turbine needs power for fuel pumps, control systems, and the starter motor. A nuclear plant needs power for coolant pumps. If the entire grid is down, how do you start the first generator? This is the black start problem, and solving it requires a specific plan that most people never think about until it matters.

Black start units are generators that can start from a completely dead grid using their own energy source. Hydroelectric plants (gravity drives the turbine) and diesel generators (self-contained fuel) are the most common. Some gas turbines have battery-powered starters. Each RTO designates specific black start units and compensates them for maintaining this capability.

The restoration sequence. After a total blackout, operators start a black start unit. It energizes a short section of transmission line ("cranking path"). That section powers the next generator, which powers a longer section. Load is added incrementally, carefully matching generation to demand at each step. Restoring frequency and voltage to normal across a large grid takes 12-72 hours, depending on the extent of the blackout.

Why can't you just turn everything on at once?

Because the grid would immediately collapse again. If load exceeds generation by even a few percent during restoration, frequency drops and protective relays trip, re-blacking the system. Operators must add generation and load in precise increments, maintaining frequency and voltage within tight bands at every step. The 2003 Northeast Blackout took 29 hours to fully restore despite having many undamaged generators available, because the restoration process itself is inherently slow and fragile.
