Net Energy Cliff
Prerequisites
Drop a fuel's EROI from 100:1 to 10:1 and society barely notices: the energy sector's own take rises from 1% to 10% of gross output. Drop it from 5:1 to 2:1 and the take jumps from 20% to 50%. The math is not linear, and the steep part is the net energy cliff.
The fraction of gross energy actually available to society follows the formula Net Fraction = 1 - (1/EROI). At 20:1, society keeps 95% of gross output. At 10:1, 90%. At 5:1, 80%. At 2:1, half. At 1.1:1, almost nothing. At high EROI the fraction changes slowly; below about 5:1 it collapses.
Setting up the math
Take a 5:1 EROI source. For every 5 joules produced, 1 goes back to the energy system, leaving 4 for the rest of society. Net fraction: 80%.
Now suppose EROI drops to 3:1, a seemingly modest decline.
Before reading on, estimate: what fraction of gross energy remains for society?
At 3:1, 1 joule in 3 returns to extraction, leaving 2 for society. Net fraction: 67%. That 2-point EROI drop eliminated 13 percentage points of net energy, roughly what dropping from 100:1 to 10:1 costs. Small EROI changes in the low range produce outsized net energy losses.
This asymmetry matters for two policy debates. First, when analysts compare modern renewables (EROI estimates range from roughly 5:1 to 20:1 depending on system boundaries) with early unconventional fossil fuels (tight oil estimates often cited at 5:1 to 10:1), the difference in net energy available to society is far smaller than the raw ratio gap suggests. Second, the cliff concept underlies concerns about energy transition costs: if a society's average EROI declines toward the cliff zone during a fuel switch, economic stress may emerge even before supply shortfalls appear. The math is not contested; the policy relevance depends on where actual EROI estimates land, and those estimates carry wide uncertainty bands.
A region's dominant energy source sees its EROI fall from 4:1 to 2:1. Using the net fraction formula, how much does the energy available to society decline?
At 4:1, net fraction = 1 - 1/4 = 75%. At 2:1, net fraction = 1 - 1/2 = 50%. The drop is 25 percentage points, disproportionately large for a ratio change of just 2 units.
