Critics of rapid energy transition argue that replacing high-EROI fossil fuels (historically 30:1 or higher) with lower-EROI renewables (estimates range from 5:1 to 20:1) will push society toward the net energy cliff, reducing the surplus energy available to sustain prosperity. Proponents counter that these EROI comparisons are misleading. Who is right depends on assumptions that are genuinely uncertain.
The debate hinges on three contested methodological choices. First, system boundaries: should renewable EROI include storage, grid integration, and backup? Including them can halve estimates. Excluding them overstates what renewables actually deliver. Second, energy quality: a joule of electricity is more useful than a joule of heat, but standard EROI treats them equally.
